How the calculation works

  1. 1

Maintenance calories. Mifflin-St Jeor BMR × your activity factor (1.375, 1.55 or 1.725 for 0–2, 3–5 or 6+ workouts a week) gives your TDEE.

  2. 2

Daily deficit. Losing a pound takes about 3,500 kcal (a kilogram about 7,700), so a weekly pace becomes a daily deficit of pace × 3,500 ÷ 7.

  3. 3

Safe floor. Daily calories never go below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men. If your pace would need less, the floor is used and the date moves out to match.

  4. 4

Date. Weeks to goal = pounds to lose ÷ real weekly pace. With a target date instead, the pace is worked out backwards from the days you have.

A straight-line estimate: real loss is faster in the first week (water) and slows as your maintenance calories drop. Not medical advice; if you are pregnant, under 18 or managing a condition, ask a doctor. The numbers behind the plan are in the TDEE calculator and how to calculate a calorie deficit.

Questions

How long will it take to reach my goal weight?

Divide what you want to lose by a weekly pace you can sustain. At 1 lb (0.5 kg) a week, 20 lb takes about 20 weeks; at 0.5 lb a week, about 40. The calculator also checks that the calories behind that pace stay above a safe floor.

How much weight can I safely lose in a week?

Most guidance puts it at 0.5 to 2 lb (0.25 to 1 kg) a week, or up to about 1% of body weight. Faster than that is harder to sustain and loses more muscle. The calculator flags any plan above 1% a week.

Can I lose weight by a specific date?

Switch to "By a date", pick the day, and the calculator works out the weekly pace and daily calories you would need. If that means eating below the safe floor, it tells you the earliest realistic date instead.

Why is my weight loss slower than the calculator says?

Water shifts hide fat loss for days at a time, and as you get lighter your maintenance calories drop, so the same intake makes a smaller deficit. Recalculate every 5 to 10 lb and judge progress on a 2 to 4 week average, not a single weigh-in.

What is my weight loss percentage?

Pounds lost ÷ starting weight × 100. Going from 200 to 180 lb is a 10% loss; even 5 to 10% brings measurable health benefits for people with overweight.
